Napes Needle on Great Gable is generally accepted as where modern rock climbing began in the 19th century. It is a spectacular rock formation jutting from the side of the mountain overlooking Wasdale. On the day in question we, gentlemen that we are, allowed these two climbers to go before us. They rewarded us by getting their rope caught on a flake and took two hours to complete the climb by which time we were chilled to the bone and a fog had come down. Bastards!
